A graduate of St. Joseph College (1944), Ann Uccello began her career as a history teacher at East Hampton High School.

In 1946, she joined G. Fox Department Store in downtown Hartford. She eventually served as Executive Assistant to the owner, Beatrice Fox Auerbach. She worked at G. Fox until 1967.

Politics

Ann first ran for Hartford City Council in 1963. She served as a councilor until she was elected Mayor of Hartford in 1967.

Ann was the first woman mayor of any city in Connecticut. She was also the first woman to be elected mayor of a U. S. capital city.

A Republican, Ann promoted a liberal social agenda with fiscal conservatism. She supported protecting children from lead poisoning, creating low- and moderate-income housing, and establishing an Info-Mobile to travel the city.

In 1971, President Nixon appointed Ann the Director of the newly-created Office of Consumer Affairs at the U. S. Department of Transportation. She worked to promote safety on public transportation. She served until 1977, under Presidents Ford and Carter.

Return to Hartford

Ann returned to Connecticut in 1978. She was active in local organizations including Hartford Hospital, Hartford Boys and Girls Club, and Hartford Public Library.

She obtained property/casualty insurance and real estate licenses. She worked with her brother-in-law at Gustafson Agencies, Inc. until her retirement in 2004.
